![]() ![]() Macklemore is stating that because he now has the certain pair of Nike shoes, that he is a cool kid, an individual but is also part of a movement. This time, he takes a more direct point of view and nails it down to a specific brand and mentions being part of a movement. They told me to just do it, I listened to what that swoosh said” Again in this second verse, Macklemore addresses the problem with consumerism. My movement told me be a consumer and I consumed it. If you didn’t have the newest gear, or you weren’t like the biggest sports star, you weren’t cool and you wouldn’t fit in with society.Īnother example is in the second verse when Macklemore raps these lyrics ‘Look at me, look at me, I’m a cool kid I’m an individual, yeah, but I’m part of a movement. Macklemore is showing that as a young boy growing up in lower class America, you have to have the newest gear or have whatever the biggest sports star has, just to be cool and fit in with society. He’s portraying himself to be a young boy who’s dream is to be like Michael Jordan, to be cool and to fit in with society. In verse one of the song there is a certain segment of lyrics that introduce the listeners to the deeper meaning in the song “Cause I wanted to be like Mike, right Wanted to be him, I wanted to be that guy, I wanted to touch the rim, I wanted to be cool, and I wanted to fit in, I wanted what he had, America, it begins” Macklemore already introduces the issue of consumerism. The song explains how people will spend ridiculous amounts of money just to fit in with society. ![]() ![]() In America consumerism was, and still is a huge deal. But once analysing the song, a much deeper meaning and idea appears, and thats the idea of Consumerism. When listening to the song, the first idea that will come to mind, is that its just another song about a pair of shoes or the brands Nike and Jordan. Each lyric rapped by Macklemore means something much more that what is portrayed. In the song Wing$, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis created a song that showed a much deeper meaning to what is shown on the surface. Personal Response 1: Wing$ – Macklemore (Song) ![]()
